How exact age calculation works
Calculating age seems simple — subtract your birth year from the current year — but accurate age calculation is more involved. The result depends on whether your birthday has occurred yet in the current year, which requires comparing the month and day. If today is March 15 and your birthday is June 1, you haven't had your birthday this year yet, so your age is one year less than the year-subtraction would suggest. This calculator handles this correctly and provides your age in years, months, and days simultaneously.
Leap year birthdays
People born on February 29 (a date that only exists in leap years) typically celebrate their birthday on February 28 or March 1 in non-leap years. Legal systems handle this differently by jurisdiction — some treat the birthday as February 28, others as March 1 for age-of-majority and contract purposes. In the US, federal law generally treats February 28 as the legal birthday for most purposes in non-leap years. This calculator uses February 28 for leap-day birthdays in non-leap years, consistent with the most common legal interpretation.
Why exact age matters
For many everyday purposes, approximate age is sufficient. But exact age in days or weeks matters for: Pediatric medicine (developmental milestones, vaccination schedules, and dosing calculations are often age-in-weeks-based for infants). Legal age requirements (some rights and restrictions activate on the exact birthday, not the calendar year). Insurance underwriting (life insurance premiums often step up on the exact birthday). Financial planning (Social Security full retirement age is calculated to the month and year of birth). Immigration (some visa categories have age cutoffs calculated to the exact day).
Calculating time between two dates
The same logic applies to calculating elapsed time between any two events — not just birth dates. How many days until a deadline? How many weeks since a contract was signed? How many months between a diagnosis and a follow-up? The calculator accepts any start and end date, not just birthdates, making it useful for project timelines, lease terms, subscription durations, and any scenario where knowing the exact span matters.
