Stripe's fee structure in 2025

Stripe's standard online card processing rate is 2.9% + $0.30 per successful charge. This is the rate for US-issued cards billed from a US Stripe account. International cards add 1.5% (so 4.4% + $0.30 for a non-US card). Currency conversion adds 1% if Stripe performs the conversion. Manual card entry (MOTO — mail order/telephone order) adds 0.5%. For in-person Stripe Terminal payments: 2.7% + $0.05. ACH direct debit: 0.8% capped at $5.00 per transaction — significantly cheaper for large B2B payments. SEPA debit (Europe): 0.8% capped at €5.

Stripe Radar and chargeback protection

Stripe includes Radar, its machine-learning fraud detection system, at no additional charge with the standard rate. Radar automatically blocks high-risk transactions. For an additional 0.07% per transaction, Stripe Radar for Teams offers custom rules and enhanced controls. Stripe also offers Chargeback Protection for an additional 0.4% per transaction — if a customer disputes a charge, Stripe covers the chargeback cost and associated fees. For businesses in high-risk categories or selling digital goods (which have higher dispute rates), chargeback protection often pays for itself.

Stripe vs. PayPal for online businesses

Stripe charges 2.9% + $0.30 vs. PayPal's 3.49% + $0.49 for equivalent transactions. On a $50 transaction: Stripe = $1.75, PayPal = $2.24. At 500 transactions/month, that's a difference of $245/month or $2,940/year — significant for a growing business. Beyond cost, Stripe offers superior developer APIs, more payment method support (100+ countries, 135+ currencies), better subscription and recurring billing infrastructure, and more extensive reporting. PayPal maintains an advantage in brand trust with consumers who prefer not to enter card details on unfamiliar sites — offering both is a common solution.

Volume discounts and custom pricing

Stripe offers custom pricing for businesses processing over approximately $80,000–$100,000 per month. Custom rates typically reduce the percentage fee to 2.5–2.7% at high volumes. Interchange++ pricing is available for enterprises — this passes the actual interchange cost from the card network through to the merchant, with Stripe's margin added on top, which can be cheaper than the standard blended rate for businesses with a favorable card mix (many debit cards or corporate cards with low interchange).
