The four core percentage calculations
Almost every percentage problem is one of four types. (1) What is X% of Y? Multiply Y by (X/100). What is 18% of $65? $65 × 0.18 = $11.70. (2) X is what percent of Y? Divide X by Y, multiply by 100. $14 is what percent of $80? (14/80) × 100 = 17.5%. (3) Percentage change from old to new: ((new − old) / |old|) × 100. Revenue goes from $40,000 to $52,000: ($12,000 / $40,000) × 100 = 30% increase. (4) Reverse percentage — what was the original value before a X% change? Divide the new value by (1 + X/100) for an increase, or (1 − X/100) for a decrease.
Why percentage change is asymmetric
A 50% decline followed by a 50% gain does not return you to where you started. A $10,000 investment falling 50% becomes $5,000. That $5,000 rising 50% becomes only $7,500 — still $2,500 below the starting point. This asymmetry is why percentage drops require a proportionally larger percentage gain to recover. Formulas: to recover from an X% loss, you need a gain of X/(100−X) × 100%. From a 50% loss: 50/50 × 100 = 100% gain needed to recover. From a 20% loss: 20/80 × 100 = 25% gain needed.
Percentage vs. percentage points
These terms are frequently confused. A percentage point is an absolute difference between two percentages. A percentage is a relative change. If an interest rate rises from 4% to 6%, it has increased by 2 percentage points — but by 50% in relative terms (2/4 × 100). Media and financial reporting mix both usages freely, often without specifying which is meant. When evaluating claims about changes in rates, taxes, or probabilities, always determine whether the stated change is percentage points (absolute) or a percentage (relative).
Common percentage mistakes
Adding percentages directly when they apply to different bases. A 10% raise followed by a 10% pay cut does not return you to your starting salary — a 10% raise on $50,000 gives $55,000, then a 10% cut on $55,000 yields $49,500, a net loss of 1%. Confusing margin and markup: a 50% markup on cost produces a 33% margin on price (not 50%). Comparing percentages that use different bases without noting the difference — a conversion rate of 3% on 1,000 visitors vs. 3% on 100,000 visitors represents very different absolute outcomes.
