How eBay's final value fee works
eBay's primary seller fee is the Final Value Fee (FVF) — a percentage of the total sale amount including the shipping you charge the buyer. The rate varies by category. Most categories: 13.25% on the total amount up to $7,500, then 2.35% on the amount above $7,500. Motors (vehicles): 2–5% depending on price. Real estate listings: flat fees. Musical instruments and gear: 8.7%. Books, DVDs, Music: 14.95%. The high FVF for most categories means eBay is generally one of the more expensive marketplaces for sellers — but access to eBay's massive buyer base often justifies the cost for the right categories.
Managed Payments processing fees
eBay's Managed Payments system (which replaced PayPal integration in 2021) adds a payment processing fee of 2.35% + $0.30 per order for most sellers. For orders with final values above $10, this is the standard rate. The processing fee is separate from and in addition to the FVF. Total combined fees on most eBay sales: 13.25% (FVF) + 2.35% + $0.30 (processing) = approximately 15.6% + $0.30. On a $40 sale with $8 shipping, total collected = $48. FVF = $6.36. Processing = $1.13 + $0.30 = $1.43. Total fees: $7.79 or 16.2% of the total.
Insertion fees and zero-insertion-fee listings
Most casual and small-scale sellers receive 250 zero-insertion-fee (ZIF) listings per month — meaning you can list up to 250 items without paying an upfront listing fee. Above that, insertion fees start at $0.35 per listing for most categories. eBay Store subscribers receive more ZIF listings: Basic ($27.95/month) provides 1,000 ZIF listings, Premium ($74.95/month) provides 10,000, and Anchor ($349.95/month) provides 25,000, while also reducing FVF rates by 0.5–2% for some categories. For sellers with high volume, a Store subscription often pays for itself in fee savings.
eBay vs. other resale platforms
Compared to alternatives: Poshmark takes a flat 20% on sales over $15 but handles shipping automatically. Mercari charges 10% + 2.9% processing (simpler, lower rate). Facebook Marketplace charges 5% (or $0.40 minimum) for shipped items — the lowest of any major marketplace for most sellers, at the cost of less buyer trust and fewer protections. eBay's higher fees come with the largest buyer base for general merchandise, robust category depth, international selling capability, and auction format — which can drive prices above retail for scarce or collectible items that wouldn't achieve the same price on flat-rate platforms.
