How Etsy's fee structure works

Etsy charges sellers three separate fees on every sale. First, a listing fee of $0.20 per item, which auto-renews every four months or whenever the item sells. Second, a transaction fee of 6.5% applied to the total sale amount — including the shipping price you charge the buyer. Third, Etsy Payments processing fees of 3% plus $0.25 per transaction (US sellers). These three fees combine on every order, and because the transaction fee applies to shipping too, sellers who charge higher shipping prices pay more in fees than they might expect.

Worked example

You sell a candle for $38 and charge $7 shipping. Total charged to buyer: $45. Listing fee: $0.20. Transaction fee: 6.5% × $45 = $2.93. Payment processing: (3% × $45) + $0.25 = $1.60. Total Etsy fees: $4.73, or 10.5% of the total sale. Your net proceeds before materials and shipping costs: $40.27. After a typical $5 USPS label cost, your actual deposit is $35.27 — only 78% of the sale price despite the product seeming to sell at a 78% gross margin.

Offsite Ads — the fee sellers often miss

Etsy's Offsite Ads program promotes your listings on Google, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, and Bing. If a buyer clicks an offsite ad and then purchases within 30 days, Etsy charges an additional 15% fee on that sale — on top of the standard fees. Sellers with less than $10,000/year in sales can opt out; sellers over $10,000 cannot. This means a high-traffic seller who benefits from Etsy's ad reach could be paying 21.5%+ of the total sale in combined fees on offsite-ad orders (6.5% transaction + 3% + $0.25 processing + 15% offsite ads − $0.20 listing which is negligible at this scale).

Etsy Ads (on-platform) costs

Etsy Ads let you promote listings within Etsy search results. You set a daily budget (minimum $1/day) and pay per click. Average cost per click ranges from $0.10–$0.50 depending on category and competition, though popular categories can run higher. Unlike offsite ads, on-platform Etsy Ads are optional and capped at your daily budget. Factor ad spend into your profitability analysis — a 40% gross margin product with a 20% ad-spend-to-revenue ratio nets only 20% before materials and time.

Pricing for profit on Etsy

A common mistake is pricing based on desired profit without accounting for all fees. Work backward from your target net profit. If you want $20 net on a product with $10 in materials and $5 to ship: your fees on a $X sale are approximately 10.5% of X plus $0.20. Solve for X: $20 (profit) + $10 (materials) + $5 (shipping label) + 10.5% × X + $0.20 = X. Rearranging: $35.20 = 0.895X, so X ≈ $39.33. Round up to $39.99 to ensure you clear your target after all fees.
